4 crafty gifts your kids can make for Father's Day

Father's Day is a great opportunity for your children to show dad how much he means to them, as well as flex their creative muscles by creating a gift.

1. Spruced-up tools

If your child's father is a real tool aficionado, consider helping your children decorate some of his tools.

  • Choose tools like hammers and screwdrivers with wooden, beaten-up handles that could be spruced up.
  • Wrap a piece of painter's tape about 1/4 of the way from the bottom of the handle. Paint the exposed part with a bright colour.
  • Once that paint is dry, remove the tape, and wrap another piece of tape around the handle about 1/4 inch from the dry painted stripe, leaving another piece of handle to paint.
  • Repeat four or five times and with other tools. Once the handles are dry, you'll have a set of bright, personalized and unique tools that dad will love using.

2. Hugs and kisses jar

  • To create a hugs and kisses jar, purchase an empty mason jar or use an empty food container from your kitchen that is washed and has the label removed.
  • Have your child decorate a 3x5 index card that says "Hugs and Kisses for Dad," and tape the note inside the jar with the text facing out. Fill the jar with dad's favourite candy, and put the lid on the jar.
  • To make the gift extra festive, tie ribbon around its top in dad's favourite colours.

3. Personalized sticky notes

  • Go to the office supply store and purchase a large stack of sticky notes that form a large block shape.
  • Using bright coloured markers, have your child decorate the outside of the stack of notes.
  • He or she can personalize it for Father's Day, or simply draw some of dad's favourite items or activities.

4. Couch potato present

For dads who just love to spend time in front of the TV, have your child help you assemble a couch potato present.

  • Buy a traditional wicker basket, then fill the bottom with confetti or tissue paper.
  • Pick out dad's favourite snacks, drinks and candy, and put them in the basket.
  • Fill it with new DVDs, video games or a universal remote control.
  • Decorate a card that says "Happy Father's Day to our Favourite Couch Potato," and give dad the basket.
