Some ideas are so original and exciting that their very mention elicits a mix of enthusiasm, curiosity and fascination. That is the case for a stroke of genius that came to Clément Marty sometime in 2013: Why not open a café with a mission to raise awareness of animal welfare? And to achieve this, why not be create a warm and welcoming space where cats roam free? “The concept is very popular in Asia, especially in South Korea, and has been making inroads through Europe in recent years,” explains Clément, owner of Café Chat L'Heureux.
It was during a three-year trip around the world that Clément came across the concept. Once back in Montreal, he decided to start an Indiegogo campaign to crowdfund the capital needed to start his own café. Montrealers’ response was overwhelming, with $45,000 raised from 1,200 enthusiasts in less than a month. "There was an incredible media buzz around the project,” Clément recalls. “The enthusiasm was such that over 100 articles were published around the world.” Café Chat L'Heureux opened its doors in September, 2014, and Montrealers’ fascination for this space has yet to wane.
