Picking the best jeans style for your shape

March 7, 2015

Be honest here: How many pairs of jeans do you currently own? Do they fit like a glove? All of them? The next time you're jean shopping, start out with a clear idea of which cut suits you best.

Picking the best jeans style for your shape

Jeans 101

Jeans come in different styles. They are not only grouped by cut, but also by comfort fit and rise.

Cuts: tapered (skinny jeans), straight, boot-cut and flared

Comfort: slim, relaxed or regular fit

Waist: high, normal, low and very low

Choosing jeans according to body shape

If you have a medium build, stay away from skinny jeans and go for regular fit, or boot-cut with back pockets. Here's how to identify the right cut and style for your body.

Inseam length

  • If you have short legs, choose straight or slim-fit jeans and stay away from boot-cut or flared styles.
  • Be especially wary of baggy jeans and create the illusion of a longer leg by hemming them at the heel instead of the ankle.
  • If you have long legs, you have every reason to show them off with slim or straight cut jeans.
  • If you’re insecure about your legs, the boot-cut will draw attention away from them.

Width of the hips and thighs

  • Straight cut jeans with a normal waist can minimize wide hips. If you’re going with regular rise jeans, make sure there's ample breathing room at the waist.
  • If your hips lead to large thighs, go with a boot-cut or flared jean with a structured waist. The ideal waist reaches up to your belly button or the top of your hip bone.
  • Another good trick is to opt for stiff, structured denim. Fabrics with Spandex, for example, are too forgiving to define your curves.

Absent or protruding buttocks?

  • Does your butt seemingly disappear every time you try on a pair of jeans? A low waist and back pockets will add volume to your curves. Say no to baggy jeans!
  • On the other hand, if you have a rounded bottom that can fill out a pair of jeans, high-waisted styles will fit you perfectly.
  • The back of the jeans should also be adequately high to ensure a comfortable fit. Avoid back pockets with buttons or other embellishments.

Concealing a belly

  • High-rise and regular fit jeans will hide your tummy.
  • The effect may flatten the belly and feel slightly corseted.
  • It’s important that the waist is supported so as to avoid the dreaded muffin top.
