Slow-cooker ideas for every season

October 13, 2015

Slow-cooker meals are the ultimate in ease and affordability, and virtually any fruit or vegetable can be cooked in the slow-cooker. Check out our seasonal slow-cooker guide to get started.

Slow-cooker ideas for every season

Winter

Slow cookers are made for winter. There's nothing better than snuggling up and getting cozy with a hot meal.

  • Apples and pears are in season throughout winter, so they're just begging to be used in a winter dessert like slow-cooker apple and pear crisp.
  • Try making a simple apple sauce with any leftover apples you have; it's great as a snack or as an accompaniment to chicken and turkey dishes at Christmas dinner.

Spring

Asparagus might seem like an unusual slow cooker candidate, but it's at its best in spring, and works so well in a variety of dishes.

  • Try a broccoli and asparagus soup or an asparagus risotto.
  • If it's not too hot, squeeze out another comforting dessert in late spring when rhubarb is in season.
  • Try slow cooking it with a bit of water and some sugar, or take it to the next level and make a crustless rhubarb pie.

Summer

Farmer's market stalls are bursting at the seams in summer. The sky's the limit: Delicious stone fruit like cherries, apricots, peaches and plums are all in season, as are strawberries and raspberries.

  • Usually, markets sell their fruit in bulk, so don't be afraid to buy large flats of berries.
  • Once you're home, make a fruity slow-cooker compote and serve with ice cream for a refreshing dessert.
  • And don't forget the fresh herbs when you're out grocery shopping: Cilantro, chives and thyme are all in season during summer.
  • A sprinkle of fresh chopped herbs in the slow-cooker will take any savoury dish to the next level.

Fall

Up  your Thanksgiving dinner table with slow-cooker stuffing with some fresh rosemary, sage, sweet onions and celery.

  • You can even make a classic pumpkin pie filling in the slow-cooker.
  • Cranberries are also in season during fall, so it's the perfect excuse to whip up a batch of cranberry sauce in the slow-cooker.

When you buy seasonal produce, you can rest assured knowing you're eating the freshest fruit and veggies possible. You'll find that there's nothing better than fresh, delicious and convenient meals all year round.
