If you're committed to staying fit, you need to plan smart. Here are 4 time-saving tips for squeezing in a workout during your lunch hour.

4 secrets for squeezing in a workout during lunch hour

1. Plan ahead in the morning

A little bit of forethought can go a long way:

  • Plan to have a snack about an hour before heading to the gym. A good way to fuel your body before a workout is with a carbohydrate-rich snack, like some granola or trail mix and a glass of skim milk.
  • Wear workout clothes that can double as work wear so you don't have to change before leaving for the gym. Don't forget to bring a change of clothes for after your workout.
  • Warm up on your way to the gym. Power walk there if possible, or just power walk from your desk to your car. This not only warms up your body, but it also puts you in the right frame of mind for a workout.

2. Be ready for the locker room

Organize your gym bag ahead of time so you know just where to find everything you need.

  • You don't want to waste time rummaging.

Make a plan for your hair, because you're not going to have time to wash and restyle it:

  • If you have long hair, do a braided up do in the morning that looks appropriate for work and also keeps it out of your way when working out.
  • If you have shorter hair or can't wear your hair up, pack some dry shampoo in your gym bag so you can freshen it up until you can get home to wash it.

3. Head to class

Most gyms cater to working people by offering 30-minute fitness classes around lunch time.

  • Opt for a class that combines aerobic exercise and strength training.

If you're not into taking a class, work out on the treadmill or an elliptical machine.

  • Vary the speed and intensity for a short but intense workout.

4. Make a smooth exit

Don't risk getting stuck in a long line for the shower by taking the time to change out of your workout clothes first.

  • Grab a towel and get right in line for a shower while you still have your clothes on.
  • You can quickly slip out of them right before getting into the shower.
  • Have a lunch packed and ready in your gym bag. After you've showered and once you're dressed and ready to go, you can quickly enjoy it on your way back to work.

With a little planning ahead, it's totally possible to enjoy the health benefits of a rigorous work out during your lunch hour.
