Your guide to buying a timeless jacket

The role of the jacket (coat, jacket, blazer)

  • They can save the day on occasions when you don’t know what to wear.
  • They warm you up in style on cooler evenings.
  • They're perfect for wearing between seasons and extend the time you can go without wearing a winter coat.
  • They go with everything and allow you to mix and match many outfits.

How to choose a jacket

Look for a good quality material and construction, the right cut and the right length.

  • If you have narrow shoulders, choose a jacket with shoulder pads.
  • If your hips are wide, forgo cropped jackets or styles that are cinched at the waist.
  • Knowing your body type will make it easier to find the right fit.
  • Avoid wearing hand-me-down jackets unless they suit you and fit you like a glove. Otherwise, it will sit in the back of your closet.
  • If you're 5 feet 2 inches or less, shop for jackets in the ‘petite’ section, as it can be difficult to find the right proportions and hemline.

The jackets you need in your wardrobe

A black blazer. It's effortlessly chic and no wardrobe is complete without at least one.

  • The cut should flatter the figure; it may be tapered at the waist but should never fall below the buttocks.
  • Try unisex styles for a more relaxed look. It is understated, and the lapel may be constructed of another material such as silk.
  • It can be coordinated with your entire wardrobe.
  • Mix it up: If you find the perfect fitted blazer, especially one that can be worn with any unmatched dress or bottom, collect them in different colours.

The classic denim jacket. If you plan to invest in a single jean jacket to wear with everything, the hem mustn’t be too short or too long. Also, choose long or three-quarter length sleeves.

  • Faded colours look great for spring and summer, while darker denim is more versatile and can be worn all year.
  • Coordinate it with a summer skirt, crisp linen dress or a trouser — and yes, it can also be worn with jeans.
  • Mix it up: An added second denim jacket in a cropped or sleeveless style.

A leather jacket. The right leather jacket should be black and genuine leather hide.

  • Buying a leather jacket is an investment and should be approached as such.
  • Avoid buyer’s remorse by saving up and shopping around to get a clear idea of the look you want.
  • The classic Perfecto is a stylish no-brainer.
  • It’s normal for the jacket to be tight at first; you’ll need time to break it in for that cool, rugged look.

Few garments boast the same perennial staying-power as a great jacket. Get the most value throughout the seasons by keeping with tradition and avoid buying lots of jackets in different colours or styles.
