The soothing benefits of massage therapy

There is nothing more relaxing and stress relieving than therapeutic methods that soothe the body. Here are a few ways the benefits of massage therapy can help.

The soothing benefits of massage therapy

Acupressure

This self-help technique is nicknamed 'acupuncture without needles' because it uses finger massage to stimulate 'acupoints' that restore the flow of energy – or qi – through the body.

  • The next time you feel your neck and shoulders becoming stiff and sore, place your fingers at the base of your neck, where it meets your shoulders, on either side of your spine. Press for 15 seconds, take a deep breath in, and breathe out.
  • Move your fingers two centimetres (about one inch) outwards, then repeat. Move your fingers another two centimetres (about one inch) outwards and repeat.
  • Give yourself a big hug to stretch your back; swap your hands over and hug yourself again.

Lymphatic drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle technique based on circular, 'pumping' movements. These are its benefits:

  • It is highly effective at countering oedema (fluid retention) after surgery and after radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
  • It's a way of easing the painful pressure that can build up with chronic catarrhal and sinus infections.
  • Regular lymphatic drainage massage can save you money in the long run by improving your general immune system.

DIY massage

You can adapt a range of techniques for use on yourself or a partner.

  • Try friction. It's particularly useful on stiff joints. Place palms side by side on the body and, using even pressure, briskly rub or 'scissor' them backwards and forwards.
  • Use kneading for fleshy areas such as thighs. Squeeze the muscles rhythmically between the thumb and fingers.
  • Knuckling is especially good for shoulder tension. Curl hands into loose fists, placing the middle section of the fingers on the skin, then rotate.
  • Add an essential oil to your massage blend. Choose a favourite scent or try neroli, which is effective as a mood lifter.
