Curate your collection

Picking the artwork for your at-home gallery wall is the fun part, but it can be difficult to narrow down a handful of pieces you want to showcase. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Living rooms are best for artwork and travel photos you want to show off, while bedrooms work well for romantic wedding images and more personal items.
  • If you want a monochromatic look, select pictures in the same colour palette with similar tones. Or go with all black-and-white photos for a timeless look.
  • Some of the best gallery walls feature a mix of photos, artwork, posters and personal keepsakes. Put your personality on display by highlighting your favourite records or incorporate a gold frame mirror for extra visual interest.

Select the right frames

When it comes to picking out the perfect frames, don’t be afraid to mix and match with different sizes, matting, colours and textures for more visual interest. If you’re on a budget, check out antique markets and second-hand shops for affordable frames. Repaint old frames for an updated look.

Measure your space

Measure the height and width of the wall you’ll be using for your wall of frames. From there, tape off the dimensions on the floor using painters’ tape to create a canvas where you can mock-up your gallery wall before you start hammering. Short on wall space? Consider working around other parts of your home – like a window, fireplace, or piece of furniture – and incorporating these items into your display.

Play around with your layout

Figure out how you want to group your frames ahead of time to avoid unnecessary holes in your wall. First lay your pieces on the floor and arrange – and rearrange – the frames until you’ve achieved your desired look. Most gallery walls tend to adhere to two distinct layouts:

  • Grid Style: if you prefer symmetry and straight lines, opt for a formal grid with evenly spaced rows and columns for a clean and crisp look. Generally, two to four inches between frames is considered standard.
  • Salon Style: for a more eclectic feel, mix and match frames of different sizes and play with asymmetrical levels and spacing to achieve a salon-style display. This relaxed layout is more forgiving and will allow you to add to your collection easily over time.

Hang your photos

Once you’ve chosen your layout, it’s time to start hanging your picture frames.

  • Begin by measuring your configuration precisely so it can be easily replicated up on the wall. Outline each frame on to craft paper to create a paper template and mark the nail or screw placement with an X.
  • Cut out your templates, arrange them on your wall and hammer a sturdy nail or picture hook through the X markings (be sure to use anchors for heavier pieces).
  • Tear away the paper templates and replace them with your chosen frames. Use a level to ensure each piece is hanging just right.

Nervous about putting holes in your wall? If you’re working with light-weight frames, purchase picture-hanging strips at your local hardware or craft store for an easy, damage-free alternative.

Once your wall of frames is installed, step back and admire your gallery-worthy display.
