8 unusual foods you can make in a slow cooker

Slow cookers are often used to cook meats and sauces, but you can also make a wide variety of foods ranging from breads to desserts in this appliance.

8 unusual foods you can make in a slow cooker

1. Dinner rolls

  • To cook rolls in a slow cooker, line the crock with a piece of parchment paper.
  • Then grease the paper and place the uncooked dough inside the slow cooker.
  • With the slow cooker on its highest setting and the lid on, the rolls should cook in 90 to 120 minutes.

2. Dulce de leche

  • To make dulce de leche in a slow cooker, start with tins of sweetened condensed milk.
  • Pour the sweetened condensed milk into canning jars with the lids on.
  • Place the jars into the slow cooker, fill the slow cooker with enough water to nearly meet the top of the jars, and then let the dulce de leche cook on low for eight to 10 hours.

3. Baked Brie

  • To make baked Brie covered in a buttery crust, start by placing a piece of parchment paper in the slow cooker.
  • Then, cover the edges and bottom of the Brie with puff pastry.
  • Place the Brie in a slow cooker on its highest setting. Once the dough has browned and the Brie is warmed through, it's ready to serve.

4. Cheesecake

Cheesecakes can crack in the oven due to a lack of moisture, so cooking this dessert in a slow cooker makes sense. In most recipes, the cheesecake is assembled in a traditional springform pan.

The pan is then covered in foil to prevent leaks, and placed in a slow cooker that has been partly filled with hot water. Four hours later, dessert should be ready to enjoy.

5. Fruit butters

These jam equivalents can often be made in the slow cooker without altering the recipe. When using a slow cooker to make fruit butter, most recipes recommend that you remove the lid and keep the slow cooker on high for approximately four hours.

6. Hot chocolate

Using a slow cooker for hot chocolate is a great way to keep drinks warm during a party. To make hot chocolate, combine the ingredients in a slow cooker set to high. Once the drink is hot, you can turn the slow cooker to low and begin serving it.

7. Caramel apples

Using a slow cooker is an easy way to quickly make caramel apples without scorching the coating.

  • Just unwrap the caramel candies and place them in your slow cooker. Keep the lid on, and turn the slow cooker on high.
  • Stir every five minutes until all of the candy is melted, then turn the slow cooker to low while dipping the fruit.

8. Yogurt

You can adapt any yogurt recipe while using your slow cooker, and allow the yogurt to rest in the crock until it's done. If you notice that the yogurt is too cold, turn the slow cooker on low for approximately 10 minutes to slightly raise the temperature.
