4 simple remedies for common ailments

Everyday ailments beg for everyday remedies. Here's a few first step remedies for common ailments:

4 simple remedies for common ailments

1. Sinusitis

  • Steam from a humidifier will help the mucus flow, clearing out your sinuses. For a faster effect, turn on your shower hot and sit in the steamy bathroom for 15 or 20 minutes.
  • You can also fill a bowl with steaming water, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, throw a towel over your head and the bowl and breathe deeply.
  • Over-the-counter decongestants can help relieve pressure and dry up excess mucus. Some combine decongestants and pain relievers. Don't use a decongestant nasal spray for more than three days; your nose can become addicted and swell when you stop.

2. Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ)

  • You don't have to stop talking, but it will help if you eat softer foods, cut food in smaller pieces and skip the chewing gum. In other words, give your jaw muscles a break.
  • Certain over-the-counter anti-inflammatories used every four to six hours can bring relief.
  • After you take an anti-inflammatory, hold a hot washcloth on your cheek for 15 minutes to relax your jaw. Repeat as needed. This often works wonders.
  • If you have ongoing symptoms of TMJ, see your doctor or a dentist who specializes in the condition.

3. Ulcers

  • Until you can see your doctor, over-the-counter antacids can relieve pain temporarily by neutralizing your stomach acids. Liquid forms may act more quickly than tablets.
  • Antacids can interact with other medications such as certain NSAIDS, tetracycline (an antibiotic) and oral corticosteroids, so it's a good idea to check with a pharmacist who knows the medications you're taking before adding antacids.
  • An ulcer isn't something you can clear up on your own. Even if antacids relieve your pain, they will not heal an ulcer.

4. Diverticulitis

  • If you have pain on your left side, fever, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, call your doctor. Less common signs include vomiting, bloating, rectal bleeding and excessive or painful urination.
  • Until you can see your doctor, eat only soft foods and drink plenty of liquids.
  • Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may temporarily decrease your pain.

These everyday ailments can definitely be a nuisance. Follow these simple at-home remedies and get back to feeling like yourself. Don't let them ruin your day!
