Kids and St. Patrick's Day

Kids can get involved this St. Patrick's Day by creating their own festive holiday crafts.

  • Most people associate St. Patrick's Day with drinking, but it can also be a very family-friendly holiday, too.
  • There are lots of ways kids can enjoy St. Patrick's Day including doing some craft projects that can help them learn about its history while having fun, too.

1. Potato printing

Potatoes are a traditional Irish food, and many people eat them on St. Patrick's Day. Turn them into a craft with your kids by creating potato stamps.

  1. Cut each potato in half, then have your child use a marker or pen to design a stamp on the surface of the potato.
  2. Use a knife to trace the image, and carve the background of the potato away from it.
  3. Pour tempera paint into small saucers, then dip the potato stamps into the paint, and press the stamps onto construction paper.
  4. Consider helping the kids make stamps shaped like a shamrock, leprechaun hat or other Irish images.

2. Green treats

An edible craft to make this St. Patrick's Day is bright green puffed rice cereal treats.

  1. Mix marshmallows, puffed rice cereal, green food colouring, sprinkles and butter.
  2. Melt and mix the ingredients over low heat on the stove.
  3. Stir together, then spread out over a greased baking sheet. Let the mixture cool in the refrigerator.
  4. Once it is cool, cut it into fun shapes that are related to the holiday. Let your kids mould the treats into whatever shape they want, and enjoy the snack.

3. Four-leaf clovers

You can have the luck of the Irish this year if you decorate with handmade four-leaf clovers.

  1. Simply take green construction paper, then have your child trace his or her hand four times.
  2. Cut out the handprints, and glue them together at the base of each palm.
  3. He or she will have their own four-leaf clover that can be used to decorate the house for St. Patrick's Day.

4. St. Patrick's punch

For a DIY kid friendly drink this St. Patrick's Day, make some St. Patrick's punch.

  1. The drink includes three simple ingredients—lime sherbet, pineapple juice and ginger ale.
  2. Have your children decorate white paper cups using green markers, then use them to serve the St. Patrick's Punch.
