Quaint little cafe with old-world-charm leaded glass windows that open to the street in summer. I have been there many times, always getting one of their breakfast meals. The service has always been quick and polite. The owner/manager was always on site and seems to take pride in good service. The place is usually pretty busy, but has a quick turn around time, so there isn't usually a wait more than a minute or two. As soon as your coffee cup starts to empty, the waitress or busser is over to fill it right back up (if you desire). It is a good old fashioned diner/greasy spoon that is great to sit back and have conversation with friends, and also great prices. Bonus, it is located close to Riverdale farms (TO's 1st zoo) which is great place (free) for kids to see animals, and near riverdale park for a game of baseball, tennis, ultimate or walking the dog. The meal is always done how you like it, and price includes coffee/tea and a small cup of OJ. Not bad at all ;) One of the most economical places to have a full meal, and unlike Yorkville restos I have never been dissatisfied with the food nor the service. The one thing they could improve on is offering more hot water for tea drinkers...we enjoy refills too! Read more

We had a family get together of 10 people dining at Crystal Rolls tonight. I highly recommend this thai-asian restaurant to people who are interested in asian food. Crystal Rolls has a big variety of food choices and almost each dish we ordered was delicious and authentic. We also enjoyed their romantic atmosphere and clean environment. Nice music and excellent service too. The best thing was that we didn't spend a lot of $ but we had a great time and great food. Open 24hrs, so prices are a little higher than other pho places. Around $9 for a large, but you get your money's worth because the portions are HUGE! They've achieved the perfect noodle to soup ratio. The soup is one of the best I've had and they do not skimp on the meat either! Fresh tender rare beef + brisket! When we arrived at New Generation, there was a line of eight people in front of us. We considered going elsewhere but the line quickly disappeared and we were soon seated at a table near the back by a friendly employee. Drinks came quickly while we looked at menus. I ordered the Beef Bento Box, which includes miso soup, salad, six maki, and then, in the box itself, beef, dumplings, tempura shrimp and vegetables, and rice. The miso soup came almost immediately and was given to everyone at the table, even those who didn't order a bento box. I've never really cared for miso, but everyone else seemed to like it. The salad came just as we finished the soup; the maki right after the salad. The next course of the meal always came right on time, just as you finished the previous one. Best of all, there was not one stabbing the entire time we were there. Employees were too busy refilling our drinks. The bento box has great quantity and quality; none of us were able to completely finish it and everything was well-prepared. As I was finishing my tempura vegetables: What the heck? There was a spring roll hidden underneath. **** YES. This is the first time I've been pleasantly surprised by something unexpected in my meal. As we writhed around in our seats from eating too much delicious food, the waitress informed us that our complimentary green tea ice cream was on its way. A bento box costs just over $10. DonDon Izakaya is Toronto's own little taste of Japan. I once visited Tokyo on a business trip, and I remember going to this strange thing called an "izakaya" on several occasions. I remember my first time: I didn't understand why we couldn't just order our own dishes or why it had to be so loud! But by the end of the night, after several decanters of sake had been shared among our group, it all just seemed perfect. DonDon kinda feels this way too. The food may not be gourmet, but it's a ton of fun to eat! (I've heard that we shouldn't expect high-quality foods from izakayas since they are more like pubs anyway!) And the atmosphere is spot on. Oh, and don't even get me started on the drinks. I fell in love with sake in Japan and we've been reunited at DonDon. I've only been to DonDon once, but I'll definitely be going back again! How does this place have such a middling rating? Is it simply THE place to watch a game. Any game. As great as the setting is for watching sports, for me the food and beer selection are the heroes. The "wing king" chef earns his title, and the range of beers wipes the floor with Bier Markt. Yes, it's busy on game nights.
