Where to play Pokémon Go in Vancouver
From choker necklaces to slip dresses, Pokémon is another 90s fave making a comeback this year. Thousands of nostalgic fans can be seen travelling across the city with their smartphones in search of animated creatures. Mahony's Tavern
36-1055 Canada Pl, Vancouver, BC V6C 0C3Canada Place is a great location for catching Clefairy and Jigglypuffs as there are a few Pokéstops nearby along the Waterfront. When you get hungry, stop in at Mahony & Sons for a truffle burger, fries and a pint to fuel up yourself. Take a break and people watch on the patio. Tip: log on to the restaurant’s free WiFi and conserve your data while playing.
Aberdeen Centre
4151 Hazelbridge Way, Richmond, BC V6X 4J7There’s a whole new reason to shop at the Aberdeen Centre and this time it isn’t because of a new restaurant opening or another Daiso dollar store. The Richmond shopping centre has transformed into a popular Pokéstop for trainers looking to get in on the Pokèmon Go action. When hunger strikes, there are plenty of places to fuel up; the food court here has everything from dim sum to to bubble tea to Korean BBQ.
Catch 122
A-120 Hastings St W, Vancouver, BC V6B 1G8Don’t be alarmed if your dining companions pick up their phones and start rigorously tapping and swiping; chances are they’re checking into this Gastown Pokéstop and fueling up on Pokeballs and other items. Given that this award-winning bistro is a favourite among local brunch fans, the Pokèmons can probably smell the delicious egg Benedicts and just want to join you for a bite!
Terra Breads
1605 Manitoba St, Vancouver, BC V5Y 0B8There are a few Pokéstops and gyms over at Olympic Village Square, so the local Terra Breads is a delicious bakery to visit while playing. Head to the patio to enjoy fresh-baked bread, sweet and savoury pastries, and handfuls of scratch-made granola while you catch your enchanted creatures. Their cinnamon brioche buns are delightful, especially when paired with a cup of coffee. Traffic here is relatively quiet but focused trainers will need to be careful as there are plenty of cars, runners, cyclists and kids playing in this busy neighbourhood.
CF Pacific Centre
701 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, BC V7Y 1G5The Pacific Centre is a prime downtown location for Pokèmon Go players. The busy street corner outside Granville Station is always packed with tourists and commuters throughout the week, but you can tell these iPhone-wielding crowds are focused on catching Zubats and Rattatas. There are a few Pokèstops in the area, plus you can tap in to the free WiFi at the mall. Head to the food court to replenish your energy or, better yet, grab a table at The Keg at Granville and Dunsmuir to reward your efforts with a grilled sirloin and a twice-baked potato.
Rocky Point Ice Cream
2800 Murray St, Port Moody, BC V3H 1X2Head to this Port Moody ice cream shop to grab a sweet cone and walk around the nearby park to catch a few Pokémon. With plenty of free parking and far less traffic than downtown Vancouver, this Pokéstop is a safe place to visit with little kids and there are lots of resting areas if you get tired of walking. On the weekends, you’ll find a couple of lures available – and I’ve caught a few rare Pokèmons here too!
The Hart House
6664 Deer Lake Ave, Burnaby, BC V5E 4H3Hart House is a West Coast restaurant next to Burnaby Village Museum. Not only does the restaurant overlook the scenic trail at Deer Park Lake, it is also a very active Pokèmon stop and gym. Visit for Sunday brunch to fuel up on mouthwatering brioche French toast and seafood eggs Benny, then stop by the virtual gym afterwards to train your Pikachu.
Pearl Castle Café Ltd
1128-3779 Sexsmith Rd, Richmond, BC V6X 3Z9If you’re in Richmond, thirsty and looking for tasty Taiwanese snacks, as well as individual hot pots and meal combos, you can take a break at Pearl Castle. This award-winning café serves up creamy milk teas and bobas with a nice chew, plus there’s plenty of free parking at Continental Mall. Turn on your fragrant incense burner to start luring Pokèmon to your location!
