Great when you need a meal that’s quick and casual, there’s no reason that a sandwich can’t also be a well-crafted work of culinary art. These Calgary establishments stack their sandwiches just right.

Peppino

The best little sandwich shop in Kensington Village, Peppino serves a gigantic roster of Italian subs. The sandwich queue is long at lunchtime, but the service speedy. Options include the Calabrese Delight with spicy salami, the cheesy, saucy hot Italian meatball sandwich and the prosciutto bocconcini, a cured-ham-and-mozzarella delight.

Myhre's Deli

A Montreal smoked meat shack, Myhre’s also serves a tres bon selection of other sandwiches including a roasted turkey and the grilled tuna. Also featuring smoked meat but dressed with sauerkraut and gouda, the grilled Reuben is a crowd pleaser.

Spolumbo's Fine Foods & Deli

Another Italian restaurant landmark with a loyal and hungry clientele, Spolumbo’s in Inglewood churns out lunchtime sandwich baskets at an amazing rate. Cold cut classics include mortadella, Genoa salami and capocollo. Try the Spolumbo’s Special, featuring an array of meats. Hot sandwiches include cutlet parmegiana, Italian meatballs and sausage with tomato sauce.

Holy Grill

Once featured on You Gotta Eat Here, this tiny diner punches way above its square footage. Holy Grill moves a stack of Panini sandwiches at lunchtime. This includes the savoury Mr. Chicken, which features sliced chicken breast dressed with bacon, mayo and red peppers. Also nom down on the New Californian, topped with a wholesome parade of ingredients such as provolone, grilled zucchini, pickled eggplant and artichoke hearts.

Caffe Mauro

Often cited as a hidden gem of an eatery, Caffe Mauro serves Italian-style sandwiches on the main floor of a brick office building across Eighth Street Southwest from Mountain Equipment Co-op. Try out the build-your-own featuring toppings from roasted peppers and artichokes to provolone and Calabrese salami.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended.
